A Guide to Extended Producer Responsibility: Understanding the New Packaging Waste Regulations in the UK

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a new packaging regulation in the UK that aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging waste by making obligated producers responsible for the full net cost of collecting and recycling all packaging that they place on the UK market.

Under this regulation, companies will have 100% responsibility for their packaging waste and associated disposal and recycling costs, rather than these being spread out along the supply chain. This means that they will need to consider the environmental impact of the packaging they use and make changes to reduce their obligation.

The major positive for the environment is that EPR is expected to encourage businesses to adopt more sustainable practices and reduce their environmental impact through packaging waste. By holding producers responsible for the end-of-life management of their products, the aim is to reduce the amount of packaging waste sent to landfill and increase the amount of packaging that is recycled.

At Here’s The Plan, we believe that the EPR regulations are an important step in creating a more sustainable future for the UK. By working together, we can reduce waste and promote sustainable practices, ultimately helping to protect the environment for future generations.
