Electricity Meter Replacements: What You Need to Know

Electricity Meter Replacements: What You Need to Know

Your electricity meter has one job: measure your consumption accurately. Getting a new meter installed doesn’t need to be a hassle, and knowing what to expect makes all the difference.

Why Your Meter Might Need Replacing

Meters get swapped out for a handful of reasons. Sometimes it’s at your request, sometimes it’s part of your supplier’s routine maintenance:

  • It’s faulty. If your meter has stopped recording consumption correctly, it needs replacing.
  • You’ve gone solar. Installed panels? You’ll need a meter that can record exported electricity.
  • Your supply is being upgraded. More demand means your infrastructure needs to keep up.
  • MHHS is rolling out. Suppliers are replacing meters nationwide as part of the mandatory Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement programme.
  • It’s simply reached the end of its life. Most meters are replaced every 10–12 years. Curious how old yours is? The first two digits of the serial number usually reveal the year of manufacture.

Getting Ready for the Exchange

Before your appointment, ask your supplier one key question: will the power need to be disconnected during the work? Interruptions are typically brief, but if you’re running critical equipment or time-sensitive operations, it pays to plan around it. Need the work done outside normal hours? Some suppliers offer this, though it may come with an additional charge.

On the Day

  • Photograph the meter, both the reading and the serial number, before and after the exchange. This is your evidence if any billing queries crop up down the line.
  • Check the engineer’s tag. They should leave a label showing the exchange date, the old meter’s serial number, and its final reading. Along with the new meter’s serial number, and the opening reading.
  • Cross-check everything. Make sure those details match your records and show up correctly on the final bill for the removed meter.

The Bottom Line

A meter exchange is usually quick and painless. Take these precautions, and you’ll keep your billing accurate and disruption to a minimum. No surprises, no stress.
