What is P442 and How Can It Reduce Energy Costs?

P442 is a Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC) modification, implemented in February 2025, that helps connect eligible renewable electricity generators, such as solar and wind farms, directly with business energy consumption. The scheme is designed to support renewable generation while creating meaningful savings for energy users.

How Does P442 Work?

Under P442, an energy supplier can match electricity generated by a renewable asset with the energy consumed by an eligible business. When this happens, the generator is treated as an “exempt supplier” for that portion of the electricity supplied.

This classification allows certain Non-Commodity Costs (NCCs) to be reduced or removed from the matched volume of energy. As a result, businesses benefit from lower energy bills, while generators receive increased value for the renewable energy they produce.

Where Do the Savings Come From?

Many businesses don’t appreciate that the wholesale cost of energy often represents only a fraction of their total electricity bill. Non-Commodity Costs, which include government policy and system charges, can account for a significant share of total electricity costs.

Through P442, businesses may be able to reduce charges associated with:

  • Feed-in Tariff (FIT)
  • Renewables Obligation (RO)
  • Contracts for Difference (CfD)
  • Capacity Market (CM)
  • Nuclear Regulated Asset Base (nRAB)

By reducing these costs on eligible volumes of electricity, businesses can unlock significant savings while increasing their use of renewable energy.

Who Can Benefit?

P442 is available to most electricity consumers and eligible renewable generators across the UK. The main exception is businesses participating in the Energy Intensive Industries (EII) scheme, which are not eligible for the exemptions.

There is currently a cap of 2.5 MWh per half-hour settlement period that can be allocated across participating businesses.

As organisations continue to look for ways to reduce costs and improve sustainability, P442 offers an innovative opportunity to align renewable generation with energy consumption while delivering tangible financial benefits.
