What Do We Mean by Settlement?

If you’ve ever wondered how electricity companies get paid for the power they generate, or how your energy supplier pays for what you use, the answer lies in something called settlement.

In simple terms, settlement is the process of calculating and finalising payments for the actual electricity supplied, used, or traded in the power market. It ensures that every generator, supplier, and customer is charged or paid the correct amount based on real data, not just estimates.

Because electricity can’t easily be stored, the amount produced must always match the amount consumed in real time. To make this work, energy companies buy and sell electricity in advance through the electricity market. But once the power has actually been generated and consumed, the system needs to check what really happened — and that’s where settlement comes in.

During settlement, the market operator (ELEXON in the UK) collects metering data from across the grid. This data shows how much electricity was truly produced and used in each half-hour or hourly period. The operator then compares these figures with the amounts that participants said they would generate or consume.

If there’s a difference between the planned and actual amounts, this is called an imbalance. For example, if a generator promised to produce 100 megawatt-hours (MWh) but only delivered 95 MWh, that 5 MWh shortfall must be covered by someone else, and the generator pays for that difference. Likewise, if a company consumes less than expected, it might receive a credit. These adjustments keep the system financially fair and physically balanced.

Once everything is calculated, the market operator issues invoices and payments to all participants. Generators are paid for what they actually supplied, and suppliers are billed for what their customers actually used.

In short, settlement is the financial heartbeat of the electricity market. It transforms the continuous flow of energy into transparent, accurate financial transactions, ensuring that everyone is paid fairly and that the electricity system runs smoothly.
